THE COTTAGE

From 1947 on, we took most of our holidays at a cottage we rented in North Wales, not far from Bala. My experiences there were influential in terms of broadening my perspectives. It was, obviously, a very rural environment – as opposed to the urban one where I normally lived – and its impact was heightened over the years as we became more integrated with the local farming community.

It was also a throwback to earlier times, as subsistence agriculture with – for instance - horses rather that tractors being the main source of power. As such, it prepared me for my later experiences in Ethiopia.
