4020 Films1 – Films from the London Film Festival

The best films we saw at these festivals were:

Kanal – directed by Andrzej Wajda, this was the most influential Polish film. About the Warsaw uprising, it was most memorable for the opening which showed you the main characters; followed by “Now you will see them die.”

Wild Strawberries – this is my only rated Bergman film, and was actually seen in Braunshweig – in the original Swedish with German subtitles.

Black Orpheus – directed by Marcel Camus, this version of the Orpheus legend was set in the Rio carnival, with ravishing camera work.

Les Amants – from Louis Malle, this starred the incomparable Jeanne Moreau – one of my favourite actresses.

‘Hallelujah the Hills’ – we saw this comedy, directed by the unknown Adolph Mekas, in one of the all night sessions. I don’t know why but its anarchy made it one of the funniest films I have ever seen.
