OUR FAMILY HOLIDAYS
9203 Aggra & Khajaraho

From Jaipur we drove to Aggra via Fatehpur Sikkri.
Fatehpur Sikkri
This time the journey was not quite as bad, but no travel on Indian roads seems to be safe.
The hotel
at Aggra was small, but still
lux
urious.
Of course, Aggra has just one site of major importance but, of course, that is
the Taj Mahal. It is a lovely building, though perhaps slightly overrated.
The fort, where Shajehan - who built the Taj Mahal - was later imprisoned within sight of it, was though also of some interest.

At long last we were able to get off the suicidal roads and managed to catch a plane to our next destination. Even so, catching it was something of a nightmare. The terminal was pretty basic, so we were all glad when we were ushered outside to wait for immediate boarding. Unfortunately it was found that there were too many people on the incoming flight. For almost three hours in the blazing sun we stood outside waiting while everyone haggled about who was to get on the plane. The internal Indian airlines are very poorly run.
Our
next stop was Khajaraho. This was on our itinerary as an opportunity to see the
famous temples with their pornographic statues. It is true that the statues were
pornographic, amply illustrating everything that the KamaSutra covered. On the
other hand they were beautiful and once more soared into the sky, absolutely
covered with beautiful statues even if they were pornographic.

The hunting palace was beautiful. It had been deserted for several hundred years, but it had not really deteriorated too much. Indeed, its condition in many respects was better than others which had been ravaged by modern reconstruction.
