Of course the main architectural feature of Florence is the cathedral, the Duomo; then the largest ever built, by Brunellesschi. The last time I'd been there – for the day - we had only focused on the doors of the baptistry.
This time, though,
I climbed right to the top of the dome itself. The staircase wove its way
through the double dome, so it was possible to see ho
w
this miracle of engineering -- in its time -- had been built. At the top there
was, of course, a fantastic view of the city; which had been preserved almost
like no other.
