OUR FAMILY HOLIDAYS
9982 Florence – Uffizi 1993
The gem of Florence is, though, the Uffizi gallery - next to the palace of the Medici. It contains some of the best paintings in the world, not least those of the Virgin by Giotto, Caravaggio's Bacchus and Titian’s Urbino Venus – perhaps the best nude ever.
Above all, from my point of view, it contains two of Botticelli's masterpieces. The one we all know is, of course, that of Venus Arising, but I love even more the Primavera.
I hadn't realised that both of these were enormous.
They must have been 12 feet high 30 feet wide. I was so impressed with them that I went back another day and spent a couple of hours just sitting in front of them. I don't know why it is that I love the Primavera, and in particular the figure of Flora, covered in flowers, but it is just such a beautiful - and incredibly peaceful - painting.
