OUR FAMILY HOLIDAYS
9990 Luxor -- 1990

Having flown back from Cairo to Luxor again, we settled down in the Hilton Hotel there. The hectic part of the holiday had finished, and we could relax around the swimming pool alongside the Nile; as I liked to do.

The temple at Luxor itself was very spectacular. But it was nothing compared with complex at Karnak - next to the hotel.
Karnak

This was an incredible complex of buildings, in particular the hall of columns which is still the largest religious building in the world.
Hall of columns
The complex, was massive and had a large sacred lake in the middle of it.

We sat overlooking the lake, one night, for a son et lumiere. This, for once, really was quite spectacular, and very well done. It was much better, for instance, than the rather tame one at the pyramids in Cairo, which I had seen earlier.

Across the Nile was the Valley of the Kings. On our way to it we also saw the funerary temple of Queen Hatsupshet. This was spectacular and very different to everything else we had seen previously. Terraces led up to the actual temple which was very shallow.

In the Valley of the Kings, as is usual, we only went into one of the king's tombs. However, it was very spectacular with the colours of the decorations, the paintings, still as bright as the day they were created.
